The search is on for the right business model to bring advertising to blogs. AOL has bought Weblogs and Yahoo has a licensing deal with Nick Denton’s Gawker Media.
Now, bloggers themselves are the founders of a new network, OSM Media, (formerly known as Pajamas Media in its transition phase). Charles Johnson, a musician and computer maven who blogs at Little Green Footballs and Roger L. Simon, a mystery writer and screen writer (also an academy award nominee) who knows how to wear the hat and who blogs at his name site are the bike guy and the hat guy, the two co-founders who have won $3.5 million in venture financing.
The new venture brings together journalists, bloggers, and commentators under a single umbrella making it easier to find new blogs…
OSM’s mission is to expand the influence of weblogs by finding and promoting the best of them, providing bloggers with a forum to meet and share resources, and the chance to join a for-profit network that will give them additional leverage to pursue knowledge wherever they may find it. From academics, professionals and decorated experts, to ordinary citizens sitting around the house opining in their pajamas, our community of bloggers are among the most widely read and influential citizen journalists out there, and our roster will be expanding daily. We also plan to provide a bridge between old media and new, bringing bloggers and mainstream journalists—more and more of whom have started to blog—together in a debate-friendly forum
OSM realizes that bloggers are the “tipping point” influencers, mavens and connectors that marketers want to cultivate. National advertisers would love to advertise on blogs if they knew the good ones, ones that were safe for their brand. What OSM is doing is providing a Good Housekeeping seal to a variety of blogs – political, sports, lifestyle and more – and doing the work of aggregating them into an audience of loyal readers. For national advertisers, OSM provides the best of the blogosphere in a “trusted and efficient package.”
For a little blogger like me who’s signed up with Pajamas Media, it’s not a lot of money to start, but I’m proud to be associated with them and so many fine bloggers. Plus, they give great parties.
