The New Oxford American Dictionary has named “podcast?? word of the year. They define it as “a digital recording of a radio broadcast or similar program, made available on the internet for downloading to a personal audio player.??
While many new words have been invented recently to describe new technology, this one is causing more of a stir because of its association with Apple’s iPod. “Podcast?? implies that it’s a broadcast intended specifically for an iPod when in fact it can be listened to on any digital music player. Forbes points out that the term is in fact a misnomer:
Neither podcasting nor podcast listening requires an iPod, and no broadcasting is really required.
In any case, podcast is probably here to stay. Last year’s word of the year? Blog.
