The Yahoo! Search Blog yesterday announced the launch of Yahoo! Open Shortcuts. Users can type shortcuts into the Yahoo! search box and skip a few steps along the way to some destinations. These examples are posted on the blog:
• Navigation example, type: !my to navigate to “http://my.yahoo.com”
• Common Searches example, type: !wsf to search “weather san francisco” on Yahoo!
• Search example, type: !wiki rozier to search for “rozier” on Wikipedia
• Application example, type: !mail email@example.com to compose a Y! Mail to “firstname.lastname@example.org”
This is very cool with the only possible drawback being that advertisers won’t be able to reach shortcuts users who skip the search results pages. But since most of these shortcuts take you to destinations that you would otherwise go to directly, it probably won’t be much of a loss for search marketers.
Try it at Yahoo Open Shortcuts (beta).
