My name is Scott, an SEO Analyst at Exclusive Concepts, and today’s topic will be a tutorial covering how to set up a business listing in Google Places, formerly known as Google Local. If you haven’t already, you may also want to check out this week’s earlier post on SEO Monday covering SEO for Google Places.
The first step in getting started will be to go to google.com/places and log into your Google account. If you don’t already have an account with Google, you can create one by clicking the “Create an account now” button at the bottom right hand of the screen.
Next, you will come to the welcome screen, where you can select “List your business” on the right hand side.
Before you can begin to work on your listing, you will come to this screen where you need to select the country of your business and then enter its phone number. Click on “Find business information” at the bottom and Google will search to see if your business already exists in Places.
If a business is already in Google Places with the number you provided in the last step, you will see it on this screen. If you see your business here, simply click the “Edit” button next to it and continue on. Most likely however, you will need to select the “Add a new listing” button at the bottom right of the screen.
The next screen that appears is where you will enter all of your business information, upload media, and more. This first section I have outlined is where you will enter the basic business information like the address, contact information, and most importantly the website, description, and category which is outlined on the screen. It is extremely important to be as descriptive as possible in both the description and category sections to help make yourself more visible for your type of business. Be sure to use a keyword-rich description and add as many categories that are relevant to your business as possible. For example, a dentist might want to add categories which include, dentist, cosmetic dentist, family dentist and so on. In the description, he or she would want to use relevant keywords like dentist, dental, veneers, crowns, implants, etc.
As you scroll down the page, you will next come to the service areas and hours of operations sections. The service areas allows you to select whether you provide services in the area like delivery or if all customers must come to your location for your service. The hours of operation section allows you to select the hours and days of the week your business is open.
Next, you’ll come to the payment options section that allows you to select which forms of payment you accept for your business. Following that section, you’ll find a section you can upload photos of employees, your building, or even happy customers.
Following the pictures is a video area where you can upload any videos pertaining to your business which can include commercials, an introduction to your business, customer testimonials and more. Lastly, you can provide any additional details you have not already provided.
The final step will be to verify your business listing either by the telephone or through a postcard in the mail. Once verified, you will have complete ownership of the listing and can update the information any time you please.
